Your files never leave your device — 100% local processing

Create a ZIP File

Bundle any number of files and folders into one ZIP. Your folder structure is kept, you choose how hard to compress, and you can lock the archive with a password. Nothing is uploaded — it all happens in your browser.

Archive settings the defaults are fine for most cases

1
File name
.zip is added automatically if you leave it off.
2
Compression level
“Maximum” takes longer and shaves off a little more. For formats that are already compressed — photos, video, music — every setting produces almost the same size.
3
Folder structure
By default the original folder structure is preserved inside the ZIP. Tick this to drop every file into one level instead; names that collide get (1), (2) appended.
4
Password (optional)
⚠️ The password never leaves your device. If you forget it, nothing can recover the archive. Keep a copy somewhere safe.
The archive is locked the standard way, so 7-Zip, WinRAR, Keka and friends open it as usual. File names and sizes stay visible even when locked — to hide those too, use Encrypt Files.

Photos, video and other already-compressed files (jpg, mp4, zip…) never shrink much. Bundling them into one file is still worth it for sending.

0 B uploaded — this page has not sent your files to any server?

Private by design — zipping and password protection run on your device, inside your browser. Nothing is uploaded, the password is never transmitted anywhere, and your original files stay exactly where they are. Free, with no limit on how many files you add.How this differs from upload-based sites — most online zip tools upload your files to a server, pack them there, and promise to delete them after a while. If you want a password you have to hand that over too, and until deletion your files are sitting on someone else's server. zipmoa has no upload step at all. The more sensitive the files — bundled contracts, scanned IDs, a company backup — the more that difference matters.

Bundle files and whole folders into one ZIP, keeping the structure and adding a password if needed

Sending twenty scattered files by email, or archiving a project folder, is simplest as a single ZIP. Drop files and folders here and this page builds a ZIP that keeps the subfolder layout, with a choice of compression level and an optional AES-256 password. Your originals stay untouched and nothing is uploaded.

A closer look

ZIP is the archive format Windows and macOS can open without extra software, so it works for any recipient. Nobody but WinRAR’s maker may build a RAR compressor under its license, and 7z needs a program like 7-Zip on a Mac and elsewhere, so zipmoa only creates ZIP. The Fast, Normal and Maximum levels correspond to compression strengths 1, 6 and 9. Repetitive content such as text, CSV, logs and source code often shrinks to less than half its size, but moving up a level usually gains only a few percent while taking several times longer, which is why Normal is the default.

When you add a folder, each file’s subfolder path is written into the ZIP, so unpacking it recreates the original layout; empty folders are left out. Characters Windows won’t accept in file names, such as colons, asterisks and question marks, are replaced with _, and names that differ only in capitalization get “ (1)” added, because they would overwrite each other on Windows and macOS. Each file’s modification time is stored too, except dates before 1980, which the ZIP format can’t hold and which are replaced with the current time. File names are written in UTF-8, together with the flag that tells unzip tools so.

How to use it

When it helps

One attachment instead of twentySend quotes, drawings and photos as a single ZIP so nothing gets left out, with the folders you sorted them into intact.
Shrinking text-heavy dataPack CSV exports, logs or source code at Maximum to fit under an upload size limit.
A locked ZIP for a partnerIf the recipient uses 7-Zip, WinRAR, Keka or PeaZip, send an AES-256 ZIP and share the password through a different channel.
Collecting files from many subfoldersUse Flatten to gather photos spread across dated subfolders into one level; clashing names become “photo (1).jpg” and so on.

Common snags

My photos and videos barely got smaller.JPG, PNG, MP4, MP3 and Office files like docx, xlsx and pptx are already compressed inside, so there is almost nothing left to squeeze. When at least 60% of the selected bytes are in such formats, a note appears under the list, and if the ZIP comes out larger you’ll see “These files were already compressed, so nothing was saved”. Pick Fast for these to save time.
Windows Explorer or my Mac can’t open the password ZIP.This tool locks with AES-256, while Windows File Explorer and the built-in macOS Archive Utility only handle the older ZipCrypto scheme. Ask the recipient to use 7-Zip, WinRAR, Keka or PeaZip. Remember too that a password ZIP still shows the names and sizes of the files inside; add Encrypt Files if the names must stay private.
Zipping several gigabytes fails. When the selected files total 2GB or less, the finished ZIP is built in browser memory before it is saved, so the originals and the result compete for space. Past 2GB the tool reads the files a slice at a time, and an archive that goes over 4GB is written in the extended format (ZIP64) that can record those sizes. The browser still holds the result until you save it, so on some devices a large job can be slow or fail. If you see “Could not build the archive”, split the job into a few archives.
It says “Could not load a part of the tool this archive needs.”The part that handles passwords and archives over 2GB is fetched the first time it is needed. If the connection dropped or a browser extension blocks scripts, you get this message; check your connection, reload the page and try again.

Tip Empty folders aren’t stored in the ZIP, so if the recipient needs an empty folder, put a short readme file inside it before zipping.

Creating ZIP files — frequently asked questions

Why can't I create a RAR file here?

Because nobody is allowed to. RAR is a proprietary format, and its licence explicitly forbids reimplementing the compression algorithm to build software that creates RAR archives. Only the unpacking side has ever been published, which is why practically every tool in the world — including this one — can open RAR files but cannot make them. WinRAR's own maker is the exception. So zipmoa offers Extract RAR but no RAR creation. ZIP has no such restriction: every patent on it expired long ago, it is a free and fully documented format, and it opens on Windows, macOS and Linux without installing anything. The same goes for 7Z — we extract it but do not create it.

I zipped my photos and videos and the size barely changed

That is expected. JPG, PNG, MP4 and MP3 — the everyday photo, video and music formats — already contain compression inside the file. Squeezing data that has already been squeezed leaves almost nothing to gain, so the result may shrink by a few percent or even grow by a few kilobytes. ZIP, 7Z and Office documents (docx, xlsx, pptx) are compressed containers too, so the same applies. Uncompressed material — text, logs, CSV, source code, BMP, WAV — routinely drops to less than half. This tool tells you up front when your selection is mostly already-compressed. For those files the point of zipping is not saving space, it is turning many files into one that is easy to send.

Is there a limit on how many files, or how large?

No limit is set. There is no upload, so there is no server cost to cap — no file count limit and no paywall. Everything runs in browser memory, though, so packing several gigabytes at once may be slow or may fail depending on your machine. If that happens, split the job into a few archives. Once the selected files add up to more than 2GB, the tool switches to reading them a slice at a time, and an archive that goes past 4GB is written in the extended format (ZIP64) that can record those sizes. The list shows up to 300 rows at a time, but every ticked file is packed.

Which programs can open a password-protected archive?

It is locked with standard AES-256, so 7-Zip, WinRAR, Keka, PeaZip and most other archivers open it once you type the password. Note that Windows File Explorer and the built-in macOS Archive Utility do not support this method — they only handle the old, weak ZipCrypto scheme. Check that whoever receives the file has a proper archiver first. The password never leaves your device, and if you forget it there is no way to recover the archive: no master key, no back door. Also note that a password-protected ZIP still shows the names and sizes of the files inside — to hide those as well, lock the files with Encrypt Files before zipping them.

If I add a whole folder, is the folder structure kept?

Yes, that is the default. Drop a folder or use “Choose a folder” and every file below it is picked up, and the ZIP holds the same folder structure. Unpacking restores the original layout. If you would rather collect everything into one flat level, tick “Flatten” in setting 3; files with the same name from different folders then become report.pdf, report (1).pdf and so on. Note that empty folders are not included.

What do the compression levels actually change?

“Fast” compresses roughly and gets out of the way; “Maximum” spends more time to make the file as small as it can. The real gap depends on the content, but it is usually a few percent of size for several times the work. That is why “Normal” is the default. If your selection is entirely already-compressed formats, every setting gives nearly the same result, so “Fast” is the better pick.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?

No, nothing is transmitted. Zipping and password protection all run inside your browser. No installation, no account. The “0 B uploaded” line further down is a live measurement of what this page actually sent (ads excluded and counted separately) — check it yourself in DevTools → Network.
