Open 7z files without 7-Zip, including split and very large archives
7z is the format 7-Zip creates, and its high compression ratio makes it popular for large data sets and software downloads. The Mac’s built-in Archive Utility can’t open it, and the default file apps on phones often can’t either. This page unpacks 7z right in your browser with nothing to install, and nothing is sent to a server.
A closer look
7z gets its small size from strong methods such as LZMA and LZMA2, combined with solid compression. Solid mode, which 7-Zip uses by default, compresses many files as one continuous stream, so the more similar the files, the more it saves. The trade-off is that pulling out one file from the middle means decoding everything before it. This page unpacks the entire archive into browser memory before it shows the list, so the bigger the 7z, the longer the wait and the more memory it needs.
The work is done by an extraction engine bundled with the page, and the result is a list of files with their folder paths and sizes. Use Save for individual files, or Save all as ZIP when you want everything. That second option turns a 7z into a ZIP anyone can open, but ZIP’s compression is weaker than 7z’s, so the result is often larger than the original archive. This page can’t create 7z files and can’t open password-protected ones either; to bundle files yourself, make a ZIP with Create ZIP.
How to use it
- Drop the 7z file or press Choose file. If its name ends in .7z.001, it’s one piece of a split set, so read “Common snags” below first.
- Wait until “Extracting…” finishes and “Done! N file(s) extracted” appears. For large archives this is the slowest step.
- Check the paths and sizes and press Save next to each file you need. Individual saves download under the bare file name, without folders.
- If the folder structure matters, press Save all as ZIP to download “original-extracted.zip”.

Tip Before forwarding a 7z as is, ask whether the recipient can open it, and if not, send the ZIP made with Save all as ZIP instead.
Extract 7Z FAQ
What is a 7z file?
A high-compression format created by the 7-Zip program. It compresses well, but Macs and phones usually cannot open it out of the box. This page extracts it with nothing to install.
How do I open 7z on Mac?
macOS Archive Utility does not support 7z. Just drop the file onto this page and it extracts right in your browser.
Are password-protected 7z files supported?
Not yet. The extraction engine used here doesn’t support 7z encryption, so even the correct password won’t open it. Use 7-Zip or another desktop app for those. Password-protected ZIP files do work.
Is it safe?
Extraction happens entirely inside your browser, so files never travel over the network.
